Marine Rescue crews from Bermagui and Narooma faced challenging conditions while towing a yacht to Bermagui Harbour on Friday, January 4, 2019.

Narooma Marine Rescue received a call for assistance from a yacht that had lost her steerage off Montague Island just after 4pm on Friday afternoon.

The Narooma crew, consisting of Ross Constable, Alison Phillip, Glen Pikethly, Michael Wahren and Ken Ribbons were activated at 4.10pm in Narooma 30.

Marine rescue spokesman Glenn Sullivan said when Narooma 30 arrived on the scene, they discovered a lone sailor attempting to jury rig his vessel in an attempt to sail back to Bermagui Harbour.

“The vessel was too large to put into tow by the Narooma crew, and with Narooma bar being closed, Marine Rescue Bermagui were also activated,” he said.

“The gentleman was able to sail a fair way towards Narooma with marine rescue following and Bermagui got there to meet him, and tow him back into Bermagui Harbour.”

The Bermagui crew of Caron Parfitt, Denise Page, Ray McLeod and Steve Angelo successfully towed the yacht back into harbour at 7.209pm.

Conditions were so bad that Narooma 30 was forced to stay in Bermagui overnight and did not return to Narooma until Saturday morning.
